Mercedes Rubio, Ph.D., is director of the Division for Research Capacity Building.
Rubio previously served as chief of the Predoctoral Basic Biomedical and Medical Scientist Training Programs Branch in the Division of Training and Workforce Development.
Before joining NIGMS, Rubio was chief of the Education and Training Section in the Division of Clinical Innovations at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. She managed several Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program grants. She also oversaw CTSA consortium-wide clinical and translational science workforce efforts. Additionally, Rubio previously managed grant portfolios at NIGMS and the National Institute of Mental Health, supporting research education, career development, and training programs. She provided support to the NIH Advisory Committee to the Director Working Group on the Physician-Scientist Workforce Working Group Report.
Rubio received a B.A. in sociology from California State University, Bakersfield. She completed her postdoctoral training in nursing and her Ph.D. in medical sociology at the University of Michigan.
